It’s a rainy Sunday out here in Lagos, Nigeria as I’m typing this blog post for you. Anyways, I wanted to talk to you about something really cool and I’ll assume that you’re kind of new to using WordPress and even if you’ve been using it for a while now, this stuff will still make sense to you as you’ll learn something awesome.
What are the most important things you need to do after installing WordPress? Well, find out in today’s blog post. There are 10 basic things you need to do after installing WordPress. So, without any further ado let’s go ahead and talk about them;
1) CHANGE YOUR WEBSITE TITLE
The very first thing you need to do after installing WordPress is to change your website title, that’s the first thing you need to do. Most times I see a lot of websites that are designed with HTML coding having no titles or untitled pages. If you don’t title your website, you’ll be missing out on a lot of potential traffic from search engines. That’s why you need to title your WordPress website.
So, in order to change the title of your WordPress website, here’s what you need to do – login to your WordPress dashboard and move your mouse over “Settings” at the left hand side and click on “General.” Once it opens up for you, simply change the title of your WordPress website and then click on “Save Changes.” That’s it.

2) ADD FAVICON
What is a Favicon? Well, a Favicon is an icon associated with a particular website and typically displayed in the address bar of a browser viewing the site.

3) SET PERMALINK AND CONFIGURE “READING SETTINGS”
The third thing you need to do after installing WordPress is to set your “Permalink” and what is a permalink? A permalink is a static internet link to an individual blog entry or news item on the World Wide Web, so to speak. In other words let’s say it’s the way your website link look like. In other to change your permalink here’s what you need to do – login to your WordPress dashboard and move your mouse over “Settings” and click on “Permalink.”
Once it opens up for you, you’ll see bunch of options to choose from but here’s what I recommend – select “Post name” and click on “Save changes.”
On the other hand, you can choose the total number of posts you want to be displayed on your blog page and also, you can set a specific page as your homepage on the "Reading Settings."
Once you click on "Reading" you should see the below screen;
4) PICK YOUR DESIRED THEME AND DELETE OTHERS
After you’ve selected or picked the theme you prefer, delete others. This will save you from the stress of automatically updating unused themes. In order to do this, here's what you need to do; move your mouse cursor over appearance inside your WordPress Dashboard and click on "theme."
Once you click on "Themes" the below screen will open up for you;
Note that you might not see the same themes as what you are seeing on the screen but you'll see some themes, move your mouse over the once you are not going to use, click on "Theme Details" and click on "delete."
5) INSTALL CACHE PLUGIN
The 5th thing you need to do after installing WordPress is to install a cache plugin and why should you do this? You need to install a cache plugin in order to increase the speed of your website. There are couple of plugins you can use to do this. The one I have found to be very effective and used over the years is the “W3 Total Cache.”
6) IMPROVE YOUR WEBSITE SECURITY
WordPress website are easily hacked. So, if you don’t want to fall a victim you have to improve your website security. There are many ways you can go about this but here’s one strategy you can use – it’s called limiting login attempt. This automatically blocks users trying to login to your website or ban their IPs so they are unable to access your website again or for a while depending on what you want.

7) INSTALL AN ANTI-SPAM PLUGIN
If your WordPress website is still kind of new, get ready for a lot of spam comments on your site but there are ways you can use to prevent these spam comments. So, I’ll give you one plugin that I have been using for some time now and it works phenomena (for the lack of a better word).
It comes most times with WordPress, it’s called the “Akismet” plugin.
Install and activate the plugin and your site will be free from spam comments.
8) INSTALL SEO WORDPRESS PLUGIN
Having a website is not enough, if people are not visiting your website it really doesn’t make any sense. No matter what you do online, you need traffic to your website and there are many ways of getting traffic to your website, SEO is one of the methods.
When you install the SEO WordPress plugin, you automatically position your website to getting traffic.
So, install and activate the SEO WordPress plugin.
9) INSTALL SOCIAL MEDIA SHARING PLUGIN
Another way to get traffic is through social media networks. You know, most people worry about building a website but they don’t worry about getting traffic to their websites. There are millions of websites right now on the internet that are getting little or no traffic at all.
Also, we have billions of people on social media networks right now as we speak and you can promote your website to them via social networks. So here’s how the social media sharing plugin helps you get traffic – let’s suppose for instance you make a post that is really interesting, when your visitors go through the content of your website and they like it, they’ll share your post on social media networks to their friends and family with the aid of a “Social Media Sharing Plugin” that can be embedded on top or below that post. Make sense?
10) ENABLE REGULAR BACKUPS
Finally, guys you must make sure you are backing up your site regularly so that should in case anything should go wrong with your site you can always restore it back to the ways it was. There are some WordPress plugins you can use or better yet, contact your hosting company and they'll help you with it.
If you are using cpanel, simply login to your cpanel and locate a software called "softaculous," and Google on how to use the software to schedule regular backups.
